Watson cable machine and how to use it

Whether its a single or a Dual Adjustable Cable machine, they may not be the first thought of many when it comes to home gym equipment, yet they are potentially a rewarding expenditure for those with the room/height & with various budget options. With versatility, beneficial strength-training capabilities, muscle-building potential, and durability with proper care, they can be a wise purchase.

The best cable machine to be part of your home gym design or to buy stand alone, is the one that fits your training needs, space, and budget.

Lets grasp how to use a Cable Machine - Cables offer a different form of resistance than traditional free weights (dumbbells and barbells). They supply steady tension throughout the lifting and lowering motions, which is linked to strength and muscle growth. Additionally, they facilitate the targeting of different planes of motion and angles.

How to Use a Cable Machine

Using a cable machine involves understanding how to adjust the machine's settings and selecting the appropriate attachments for different exercises. Here is a general guide on how to use a cable machine:

Setting Up the Cable Machine

  1. Adjust the Pulley Height : Most cable machines have adjustable pulleys. You can move the pulley up or down depending on the exercise you are performing. For example, set it high for overhead exercises like tricep extensions, in the middle for rows, and low for exercises like glute kickback.
  2. Select the Weight : Use the weight selector pin to choose your desired weight from the stack. The top of the stack represents the lightest weight, while the bottom is the heaviest.
  3. Choose the Attachment : Cable machines come with various attachments such as ropes, handles, and bars. Select the appropriate attachment for your exercise and clip it onto the cable.

Performing Exercises

  • Tricep Rope Pushdown : Attach the rope, set the pulley high, and pull the rope down while keeping your elbows close to your body.
  • Cable Row : Set the pulley at a mid-height, attach a handle, and pull towards your torso while keeping your back straight.
  • Cable Fly : Use handles, set the pulleys slightly above shoulder height, and bring your hands together in front of your chest.

Tips for Safe Use

  • Check Equipment : Ensure that the cables and attachments are in good condition before use.
  • Proper Form : Start with a lighter weight to focus on maintaining proper form and gradually increase the resistance as you become more comfortable.
  • Ask for Help : If unsure about the setup or form, ask a gym staff member or trainer for assistance.

Benefits of using Cables Machines:-

Consider incorporating a cable machine into your fitness regime. This versatile piece of equipment offers a wide range of benefits that can help you achieve your fitness goals more effectively.

  • Cable exercises can benefit your gym routine by assisting with the growth of bigger, stronger and more defined muscles.
  • They use a continuous resistance during both the concentric and eccentric motions, which is different from free weights and gym equipment, thus providing a more effective and efficient workout for your muscles.
  • Vary handle attachments to utilize multiple grips and hand positions, enabling distinct muscle or muscles to be worked in alternative ways to augment growth.
  • Weight adjustment speed and simplicity make them suitable for use in drop sets and other techniques for extending sets for muscle development.
  • This piece of exercise equipment enables a full-body workout, targeting major muscle groups.
  • They enable unique motion patterns, variations of motion, and planes of direction difficult to replicate with free-weights or machines to compel muscle growth and strength.
  • Beginners can gain foundational knowledge and secure experience in fundamental moves using these tools, prior to undertaking weighty activities with dumbbells, barbells, and more intricate apparatus.
  • These machines are ideal for post-injury rehabilitation by allowing weakened muscles and joints to be strengthened gradually and securely.
  • they target the smaller supporting muscles around your joints for improved stability, compared to stationary weight machines that don't.
  • Experienced lifters can maximize muscle growth by precisely targeting a single muscle group with these items.

Understanding Cable Movement Ratios

So to understand how to use a Cable Machine its vital you choose the cable movement ratio to suit your needs. Cable movement ratios refer to the relationship between the movement of the cable and the movement of the weight stack or resistance felt at the handle in cable machines. These ratios determine how much resistance is felt and how the machine operates during exercises.

Common Cable  Ratios

  1. 1:1 Ratio : This means that the weight at the handle is equal to the weight selected on the stack. For example, if you select 40 kg on the weight stack, you will feel 40 kg of resistance at the handle. This ratio allows you to access the entire weight stack, which is beneficial for exercises requiring high resistance, such as lat pulldowns or leg presses.
  2. 2:1 Ratio : In this setup, the resistance felt is half of the weight selected on the stack. For instance, selecting 40 kg on the stack results in 20 kg of resistance at the handle. This ratio is useful for exercises that require more cable travel and less resistance, such as functional training exercises that involve fast cable movements.
  3. 4:1 Ratio : This configuration provides even less resistance, with the weight stack moving only a quarter of the distance the cable is pulled. It is advantageous for explosive power training and exercises requiring fast movements, but it significantly reduces the effective weight, which can be limiting for heavy lifts.

Applications and Benefits of each Cable Ratio

  • 1:1 Ratio : Ideal for heavy lifting exercises because it allows the use of the full weight stack. It is suitable for exercises that do not require fast cable movements.
  • 2:1 Ratio : Offers a balance between resistance and cable travel, making it suitable for exercises that require more dynamic movements. It is often used in functional training.
  • 4:1 Ratio : Best for exercises focused on speed and explosive power, as it allows rapid cable movements with reduced resistance. It is particularly useful for lower body conditioning and exercises that involve horizontal resistance.

Understanding these ratios helps in selecting the appropriate cable machine setup based on the specific training goals, whether it is maximising resistance for strength training or optimising cable travel for functional and speed training.

For functional movements, "fast cables" are preferred, meaning cables that can be rapidly extended and retracted without much slack buildup. We obtain this through mechanical advantage, a mathematically-calculated arrangement of pulleys that gives us a cable ratio of around 2:1 (some flip it around and label it 1:2, but understanding the concept is key). When the cable is pulled, the weight stack moves up one foot for every two feet the cable moves. Since the stack's inertia is reduced in this setup, the cable is more responsive. In exchange, the total weight available is the reduced and that's the trade off.
